Part 1 | Into a world of sin...

Isaiah 6:5 | When the prophet Isaiah saw God, he said, “Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

———————————

O God, we confess to you that we are a people of unclean lips:

we have complained aloud;

we have spoken harshly to others;

And we know that our lips reflect our hearts.

Our hearts are unclean:

We put our hope in things other than you.

We fear the things of this world instead of trusting in you who created the world.

Lord, have mercy on us.

God's Response to Our Sin

Isaiah 1:18 | “Come now, let us settle the matter,”

says the Lord.

“Though your sins are like scarlet,

they shall be as white as snow;

though they are red as crimson,

they shall be like wool.

Matthew 1:20-23 | 20 An angel of the Lord appeared to [Joseph] in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

Part 2 | ...Christ enters in

Titus 3:3-8 | It was a world full of bad people. Sin-filled people. It was our world. And we were the people. But then it entered--the kindness and love of God. And it appeared to us as the person of Jesus Christ.

3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

Luke 4:14-22, 28-30 | Jesus was saying, "Hey, remember what the old prophet you love said...yeah, that's about me." And for a while, they were excited and they loved him. But then he told them he came to deal with the sin of all people--that's the kind of Messiah he was, and well...then they didn't like him so much anymore.

14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to set the oppressed free,

19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

Part 3 | Christ Came to Take & Give

Isaiah 61:1-3, 10, 11 | This is what Jesus came to do. And this is what we do because of Jesus.

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,

because the LORD has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim freedom for the captives

and release from darkness for the prisoners,

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor

and the day of vengeance of our God,

to comfort all who mourn,

3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—

to bestow on them a crown of beauty

instead of ashes,

the oil of joy

instead of mourning,

and a garment of praise

instead of a spirit of despair.

They will be called oaks of righteousness,

a planting of the LORD

for the display of his splendor.

10 I delight greatly in the LORD;

my soul rejoices in my God.

For he has clothed me with garments of salvation

and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,

as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,

and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up

and a garden causes seeds to grow,

so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness

and praise spring up before all nations.

Part 4 | Jesus, Enter In

Prayer (words by Charles Wesley, 1700s)

Come, O long-expected Jesus,

Born to set your people free;

From our sins and fears release us

By your death on Calvary.

Israel's Strength and Consolation,

Hope to all the earth impart,

Dear Desire of ev'ry nation,

Joy of ev'ry longing heart.

————————————

Born your people to deliver,

Born a child and yet a king,

Born to reign in us forever,

Now your gracious kingdom bring.

By your own eternal Spirit

Rule in all our hearts alone;

By your all-sufficient merit

Raise us to your glorious throne. Amen.

THANKSGIVING

We don’t primarily gather offerings to simply keep ministry going or even to expand ministry (though those are certainly both blessings of our offerings)

Primarily, we gather offerings to glorify God. We consider what God has given us to manage (everything we have), and we offer a portion of what he has given us back to him. Giving an offering is one of our ways of regifting what God has given to you!

You can do just that by mailing a check or clicking the button below.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory

are yours now and forever. Amen.
