The church (that is, the organization) and the scientific community have, for one reason or another, had a tenuous relationship throughout history. This isn't one side or the other's fault - it is just the way it has been. It results from different approaches being taken within the two communities. 

The good news is this: both communities have valid approaches. The bad news: neither seems to want to be patient and listen. One of the most unique challenges the church will face over the next several generations is the challenge to work with science, not against it, while holding onto the truth.
