THE MINISTRY OF REST
When Illumine approaches a worship event, spiritual rest is the goal. This restfulness permeates all the pieces that combine to make worship - the art, the music, the spoken word, the order. Why rest? Because that's what the Means of Grace (the truth of Jesus in Scripture and Sacrament) offer. They offer a God who has done the work for us, asks for our burdens, and offers us life without worry.
The resources you'll get when you click the links here in the worship section are going to help you create that same experience. God wants to serve your people. He wants them to rest in his arms. He wants to do that in worship. We hope these resources help you offer God's spiritual rest.
SERMON SERIES
Illumine uses Sermon Series to help build narratives both in individual services and throughout the series. We won't write your sermons for you, but we can save you time by providing you with the resources necessary to put these ideas in front of your people.

There’s a very serious proposition in this sermon series: If you learn to look at your life in light of the life of Christ, you will be able to see life much, much better. There are two ideas in the phrase “See life better.” The first is that you can see life more clearly. When we look at the world in the way God shows it to us, it really can make sense. The second is that you can see life improve. This has to come second – if you don’t see life more clearly, things will stay the same. But if we approach life more wisely, we will also see it change for the good.
Note: This 4 week series was originally used around Easter (with the second week being Easter Sunday) but adjustments could certainly be made to use this at any point in the year.
Whether you think of Elton John’s “Your Song” or Aloe Blacc’s “The Man,” the words “you can tell everybody” mean the same basic thing: you can be proud enough of what is going on to want to tell every possible person. And what will you tell them? That you are loved by someone significant!
This is, very easily, the message of every person – because we are all loved by God in Jesus. Jesus is certainly someone significant (as we’ll see especially well on Easter Sunday) – and he loves you. So what can you do? You can tell everybody.
Note: This 3 week series was designed to begin two weeks before Easter and end on Easter Sunday. It also includes Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services.
Peter’s perspective on the End Times is the sort of key or angle of approach for this series. He and the other leaders of the very early church were almost obsessed with the End Times, even to the point that it was a problem for them that had to be addressed in Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians. Despite these issues, there was a reason they were so focused on the End Times: they’re the point.
Everything Peter hoped for, his whole perspective on the coming of the kingdom of God, he figured out as he meditated on and studied Scripture regarding God’s victory at judgment. He states that we have the prophets, an even more certain and reliable source for what is coming than the transfiguration.

COMMUNION SERVICES
Whether you are celebrating the Lord's Supper with your family, at a meeting, or in any other private setting, our orders of service provide a short meditative liturgy to help prepare hearts to receive the Sacrament.

As each new year approaches, we think of fresh starts, resolutions, and renewal. This service explores a God who both never changes but is constantly renewing us.
This service uses a question and answer format designed to help those who are participating consider the very practical and immediate ways that receiving communion today can be helpful for tomorrow.
An adaptation of the WLS Dogmatics notes, this service explores what makes a person worthy or unworthy to receive communion.
Using Christmas songs and responses from Scripture, participants will reflect on the birth of Christ as they prepare their hearts to receive the Lord's Supper. Juxtaposing the birth of the infant Christ with the giving of his body and blood in death provides a powerful reminder of what Christmas means.
The Bible is filled with the idea of renewal. This service explores how we are made new through the Lord's Supper.
Using guiding questions (provided), participants will meditate on the lyrics of a communion song of your choosing as they prepare their hearts to receive the Lord's Supper.
Drawing quotes from Martin Luther's Large Catechism, this service will remind participants of the importance of the supper, particularly focusing on the fact that nothing can shake the promises within it.
This question and answer, responsive reading style services reminds participants of (or introduces them to) the simple way to understand the Supper that Luther provided in the Catechism.
The shared confession of the truths of the Apostles Creed remind those partaking that they are one loaf, brought together by the God who made this creed worth believing. The service uses proof passages, read responsively with the creed.

EVENING WORSHIP
Our Evening Worship services are designed to be calming, peaceful, and contemplative. Like all of our Worship events, the goal is to give spiritual rest. These services use a large amount of music, along with responsive readings and prayers, centered around a single theme and devotional message. They are followed by a time of individual prayer.

Jesus gives us a perfect example of how we should interact with those around us. It’s starts with humble submission. Jesus has every reason to boast; he is God himself, but he humbly submitted himself to the will of the Father. Secondly, we should work in unity with one another. With Jesus as our head, we each have our different roles as members of the body, but without unity, the body cannot function. Finally, we do all of this so that we can serve our neighbors.
As each new year begins, we are filled with thoughts of fresh starts, resolutions, and renewal. God has a lot to say about all of these. Whether it is making resolutions, feeling like there is nothing new, or yearning for renewal or reconciliation, the Bible makes it clear that there is one thing that makes all of these work/not work: Christ. This service uses songs, scriptures, and prayers to point to Christ being central to all things.
Over and over again, throughout the Bible, we see metaphors of Light & Dark, Day & Night, Visible & Hidden. This service takes a look at several of those metaphors as they pertain to the coming of Christ (both his first coming and his second coming). We see Jesus as the light that shines in the darkness and the Bright Morning Star.
This service reminds us that this world will always fail to fulfill us. The good news is we aren’t meant to stay here. As the hymn says: “I’m but a stranger here. Heaven is my home.”
This service aims to put you in the place of the disciple during and following the events of Holy Week. The disciples experienced feelings of desertion and doubt, but also clarity and belief as they slowly came to understand what had happened.
This service focuses on the idea of worry and what the Bible has to say about it. The central Scripture passage comes from Luke where Jesus very boldly and simply tells his disciples, "Do Not Worry."
In the month of November, it’s very common in America for people to reflect on their lives and be thankful for what they have been blessed with. As Christians, our hearts will certainly overflow with thankfulness when we reflect on the many spiritual and physical blessings God has bestowed on us; but he calls us to something higher than just thankfulness. God calls us to be content at all times and in all circumstances.
As a Christian experiences the highs and lows that life brings, their faith also fluctuates. We will all experience doubt in one form or another. The devil will make sure of it. It is at these times that we can cry out like the father in Mark 9, “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” This service explores how we can overcome our doubts, how we can use these trials to grow in our faith, and how we can encourage our brothers and sisters as they go through trials and doubt.
This service examines different types of pray by looking at examples from throughout Scripture. It also uses David as a lens to see how each of the types plays out in the life of a Christian.
This service focuses on the idea of sorrow and how a Christian can approach dealing with grief. The theme "Take Heart" comes from the Psalms where we are told to "Take heart and wait for the Lord," as well as Luke, where Jesus tells us, "Take heart, I have overcome the world."
MUSIC
Music is one of the foundational pieces that combines with art, the spoken word, and the order of service to make a worship event. When Illumine approaches worship, spiritual rest is the goal, and this restfulness permeates the music used. God wants to serve your people and wants them to rest in his arms, and we hope these musical resources help you offer that spiritual rest.
